Fun Date Night Ideas for Married Couples

Guest post by Heather Green

Spending quality time together is essential the success of a marriage. Most experts recommend that couples make time for a date night at least once a week. “Date night” can be anything you want it to be — except time to run errands, clean the house, or spend with other friends and family. Those things are all important, as well, but a date night should focus on giving the couple some time alone together to bond and to help maintain the romantic spark. Not all date nights have to be big, expensive, romantic affairs. Simply getting out and having some fun together is a great way to bring couples closer. The next time you’re planning a date night with your spouse, try one of these fun activities:

Go to a Drive-In Movie
Relieve some of the nostalgia of your youth by going to a classic drive-in movie theater. These are becoming harder to find, but there is likely one still near where you live. Go to a double feature, grab some popcorn, and hold hands under the stars. If the weather is nice, bring along a blanket to lay out on the hood of your car or on the grass.

Sing Karaoke Together
You don’t have to be a good singer to enjoy karaoke. Almost everyone can enjoy the thrill of singing in front of strangers. Pick a favorite tune and sign a duet together. Make it more fun and special by choosing a song from when you were younger or when you first started dating.

Make a Meal
Eating out at a fancy restaurant can be very romantic and relaxing, but trying out new recipes and exotic cuisine in your own kitchen can also be fun. Pick a dish that you’ve never tried and make it together at home. You will enjoy the learning process, trying something new, and working together to create something that you will enjoy together.

Hit the Club
Dancing the night away isn’t just for singles. Head out to a local club and get your groove thang on — then go home with each other. You’ll relive the thrill of being single, enjoy some fun dance moves, and rekindle a bit of the spark that initially drew you together.

Get Crafty
Remember that famous scene in Ghost with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore at the pottery wheel? It showed us all that arts and crafts can be sexy. And they can also be fun! Indulge your inner child by making fun craft projects together, or get in touch with your sensual side by enjoying more hands-on creations like sculpting and pottery. You can also try seasonal activities like pumpkin carving or baking holiday cookies. The key is to do something you will both enjoy.

Be Tourists in Your Town
Staycations are all the rage in these economically depressed times. However, you don’t need a whole weekend to devote to one. Spend the evening pretending to be tourists in your own town. Go to hot spots and attractions that you haven’t visited, bring a camera, and take lots of pictures and ask lots of questions. If you really feel adventurous, try out a fake accent or invent a fake back story to tell the locals that you meet.

Act like Kids
Arcades and bumper cars are not just for kids. Head out to a local amusement park for the night and have fun chasing each other around in bumper cars. Enjoy a few slices of pizza and maybe a game of laser tag while you’re there. You don’t have to tell the kids when you get home!

There are many, many more ways that couples can enjoy a fun night out together. The key is to be creative and to try activities that aren’t a part of your usual routine. Enjoying new activities like these will help you grow closer as a couple and keep the romantic spark going.

What are some of your favorite fun date night activities? Tell us in the comments!

  1. Forget cooking dinner together… do some baking! After all, what beats fresh-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies (besides the batter straight from the bowl) – spending the time together to make them.

  2. I’m with you, cookies or other treats top the list for me! Thanks. Maybe some pumpkin bread tonight.

  3. Assuming you have the house to yourself, shut off all the lights and play hide and seek. I’m with the Heather. Act like a kid!

  4. We like to plug in our Droid X in our SUV and go and park somewhete quiet and romantic and watch a movie together. Pillows, blankets, and comfort food included!
